Panathenaic Way

Named after the solemn procession that represented the high point of the festival of the Panathenaea, the Panathenaic Way leads from the Dipylon to the Acropolis through the Agora. The procession entailed the delivery of a new dress to the goddess Athena in her temple of the Parthenon. The festival was held annually during what we call July. Later, the event was extended every four years and the Great Panathenae was held instead. This event was considered one of the most important festivals in Athens. Supposedly instituted by Theseus and in honor of Athena's birthday, the Great Panathenae featured sporting events, musical contests and sacrifices.
